Any play by mail or play by forum RPGs?

While I have not played by Mail or via a Forum since the days of CompuServe, I was looking for a new Online Roleplaying group. I realise the last post in here was a while ago, but I was wondering whether anybody could point me in the direction of some games. :)

Oddly, i was thinking about the same thing the other day, I had a weird urge for some nostalgia from when I used to play D&D. I've looked at Fantasy grounds for D&D, however the addons are over 200 quid! (Ouch)

Okay, that is expensive. Having said that, I think I will take a closer look at this. I am still DMing a group of D&D 3.5 that has been playing for years, even though most in the group are so busy that we barely manage to play 4-5 times a year. Might be a nice tool for that, too.

I am currently looking closer at Fantasy Grounds, too, but I really do not see much of a difference between the Standard and the Ultimate version....

I think the main difference is that ultimate edition can host/DM games for both Standard and "Trial" accounts

I'd probably buy the standard myself if I purchase it.

There is also a website called "Roll20" I've not managed to look at that properly however.

So from what I gather, you can either build campaigns and GM people through them, or just play. I downloaded the demo version and have been clicking through it a bit, but without reading the manual. ;-) I think I will take a closer look sometime this week to see whether this is something that might be interesting.

It looks like for 5th ED you would need Standard Licence
and as a player Core Pack Which includes the inbuilt players manual for making characters as well as Core Monster Pack as a DM

Then you can tack on any of the Adventures as you go along I guess as a DM Like Curse of Strahd

I'm assuming that only the DM needs the adventure packs?
It looks like it has some 3.5ED Adventure packs, but the Core Packs are 5E it appears.

Edit: Thinking about it, might need the Core player pack and the Monster pack as a DM, as core player pack might help for making NPCs?

Edit 2: Argh, Just found the DM Guide too, lol, Expensive old stuff.

Edit 3: The Fantasy Grounds D&D Complete Bundle seems to include all of the above plus some more adventure packs. However it's expensive at £243.. (All 5th Ed)

I've not played any D&D since the late 90s I'm pretty sure I played mostly 2nd - 3rd Edition.

Dragonlance, DarkSun, Forgotten Realms (Inc Al-Quadim) and some Ravenloft..
Brilliant fun :)

Well, I do not actually play 5th Edition. I dislike the 4th Edition so every time we play we still play in the 3.5 time period with the 3.5 rules. But then, I am playing a custom campaign.

When I have some more time to dig through this stuff, I will try to find out how to build and/or play some stuff. :)

I noticed that the software actually has the information regarding classes and races for 3.5 when i had a quick look earlier, You can't drag and drop some things like you can with the 5E stuff though, but certainly could be usable :)

Let me know if you want someone to test with mate, I'm probably going to buy FG anyway, as I've been meaning to for a while.

If you don't give a damn about the game automatically doing a lot of things for you then I'd recommend table top simulator on steam. it's pretty basic but you can make DND boards easily and it comes with about 20 minatures already. It has dice rolling, players can move pieces and you can quite easily make icons (flat buttons/coins re-textured) for it by linking to images on imgur for example.

It's very adaptable to any game really. Maybe wait for a sale, but it's 15 pounds full price.
