From what was said in the "Sound Blaster" thread, and its about time i got a new mobo anyway

Whats the best AMD chipset mobo atm then?
not including the duel one though

looks like ABIT KG7-RAID with AMD 760 chipset?

and what about NVIDIA nForce chipset anyone know much about this?
i know its basically a cut down version of the technology NVIDIA developed for the Xbox, and the Xbox specs are currently well beyond even the most adanced products available for the PC market

The KG7-R only has the AMD northbridge, it still has the VIA southbridge. The NVidia chipset motherboards are supposed to be a bit flaky at the moment and they get outperformed by the new VIA chipset.

If you don't want a Dual AMD machine then the only choice is to get a P4 with an Intel chipset motherboard. There is nothing wrong with motherboards with VIA chipsets, I'm just wary of them.

Stupid is as stupid does
Isn't that a bit like saying "There's nothing wrong with Che Guevara, he's just a Nazi in disguise?"

Or you could be sensible and sack off a P4 altogether...unless you want a server, and then IMO you'd be better with Dual MP's.

Get a mobo with the AMD761 chipset...like my EPoX EP-8K7A(+)...even tho it's still got the VIA 686B Southbridge...which has given me, my Live 5.1 and XP Pro rig no problems whatsoever.

I can vouch for VIA chipsets - they honestly don't have as many problems as people think - all the 686b problems have been patched out with BIOS updates now. I have an IWill KK266-R mobo with SB Live! 5.1 and it's 100% stable under WinXP :) Well, apart from a bug in the SB Live! XP drivers which clobbers me every couple of weeks...

But anyway, the KG7 is probably the sweetest Socket A board around right now. Unless you wait for the IWill XP333 - which will decimate all :) Actually, I think it's meant to be out - I can't find anywhere that sells it though. Avoid any board based on the original KT266 chipset though - if you overclock it, USB won't work.

I couldn't recommend a P4 system unless you have cash to burn on it, simply because you could get a much faster system for your cash going the AMD route. If money was no object however, I would have to favour the P4 + RDRAM combination - it's pretty sweet.
