Preparations for PvP: Building a tackling Frigate

I am currently using EFT to play with some builds for creating a Frigate that I want to use for tackling in PvP.

As I have no clue what to do (as usual), I set up the following two builds, which I figured might work okay. I am told I need to be small and fast to get to the targets alive, so let me know whether I went overboard with speed. :) I put in the Invul Fields due to concerns regarding longevity. If I am fast enough to speed tank stuff like this, I am of course interested in anything else I could slap into that slot. Comments are welcome. :)

Frigate: Virgil
Low:
3x Overdrive Injector

Mid:
Afterburner 2
Invulnerability Field 2
Warp Scrambler

High:
2 150 Light AC 2
1 TE 2100 Standard Launcher

Result: Cap neutral and max speed of 1958 with 44 signature.

Frigate: Rifter
Low:
3x Overdrive Injector

Mid:
Afterburner 2
Invulnerability Field 2
Warp Scrambler

High:
3 150 Light AC 2
1 TE 2100 Standard Launcher

Result: Cap neutral and max speed of 1581 with 35 signature.

***EDIT: Checking on prices, I probably went overboard with the T2s... Will probably have to settle for a budget version of them that will still do the job... :) ***

The point of tackling frigates is that they are pretty much free to lose. If you're tricking one out with T2 gear then you've missed the point a bit.

Your weapons are pretty much secondary to your main purpose of getting close to someone and staying locked on so fit whatever you have room for after everything else is fitted. Make it cheap, T1 autocannons are fine. Your DPS will be laughable even with T2 guns so don't try too hard.

You want a MWD instead of an AB because you may have to cross a lot of space very fast to get into tackling range, your other mids should be either a webber and a disruptor or a disruptor and a scrambler (a warp scrambler works better against ships with an MWD than a webber).

Lows should be two Overdrive injectors and a Nanofiber structure.

Your tank is provided by your speed and the fact that your transversal will be so high that guns can't track you at the ranges you'll be tackling at.

Hmmm... With a webber and disruptor as well as a WMD in mid slots, I will be able to keep all three running for 33 seconds. Even if I turn off the WMD, I only last a minute. If I use AB, warp scrambler and webber, I can have all three running indefinitely. WMD, warp scrambler and webber lasts about 70 seconds...

What I had planned instead of the Invul Field in the last mid slot, aside from the warp scrambler was a targeting scrambler. Bad choice, I take it?

I assume the trick is to stay at those high speeds for the whole duration of the fight?

Normaly you pulse the MWD rather than run everything all the time. You also won't need to run the Warp Disruptor and the Warp Scrambler at the same time for long periods of time - you use the disruptor as you close and then switch to the scrambler if needed at short range. At scrambling range, anything you are likely to be tackling won't be able to hit you even with the MWD off.

Other ewar like tracking disruptors, sensor damps etc is usually applied from dedicated ewar vessels, tacklers don't normally fill that role as well because you don't usually apply ewar to the target that's being tackled - he's going to die very soon so it's better to prevent his friends from getting in the way.

I assume your going to run with friends/corp etc? Tackling frigates are cool aslong as you dont think your going to solo much else above you.

Fly a rifter, they are fun

I do not have a lot of friends in Eve. I soloed most of the time and the friends I had stopped playing for the most part. Right now I am trying to prepare myself and the char for being useful, then I will start looking for a Corp.

The list of things you can take on solo in a tackle frigate is pretty small. Anything small enough that you can damage it will either shred you (AFs, inties) or run away (covops). Anything that can't hit you will tank your damage forever.

There are loads of alliances that are recruiting PvP pilots right now, you could join a Euro tz alliance like ZAF or Ev0ke for example and get in the big fights with free ships.

Not bad at all...
