Undercoat white.

Paint the armour Adeptus Battle Grey

Paint a very thinned down line of Fortress grey around the edges of the armour.

Line highlights with Space Wolves Grey

Optionally after painting it Adeptus Battle Grey, wash it with Devlan Mud (all over) then repaint a thin coat of Adeptus Battle Grey over it leaving the Devlan Mud in the recesses.

Start simple and get to grips with that, then just experiment as you get better, a healthy soaking in Cillit bang can clean up those plastic minis in 5 yrs time when you look back and think Yuk did i really paint those?

Req's advice seems simple and effective. Id go with the Devlan mud though it will work wonders

as i am double checking everything

whats "very thinned down line"?
i'm testing some on crappy models (although i've started 4 already with a bad scheme so i will strip those down, what is is that you suggest?

What I mean is that you paint a thin line - about the width of your brush - of quite thin paint around the edge of each plate, the rims of the shoulder pads and so on. You want the paint to be pretty thin because that will make it more translucent.

Finally use the Space Wolves Grey and run the edge of your brush around the corners of the plates so that the very edges of the plates are outlined. Make sure you don't have too much paint on your brush otherwise it will go everywhere, just run the side of the brush along the edges of the plates and you'll end up with a nice neat highlight.

Cuth, if you're prepared to put up with the stench of pre-deodorant-discovery-teens , the chaps in GW metrocentre are pretty willing to let you sit in store and use up their paint supply and show you the basics. My 13 year old did a few weekly games lessons there about 6 months ago an I sat around painting while he did it. Picked up some useful tips and enjoyed the hour or so pottering around without distractions. They're massively into promoting their products but that tends to mean that you get to use the new stuff for free on all of your models 'to see how good it is'.

One of these days ill wander into my local GW and pull out the Army Painter brushes and the Vallejo paints... just to annoy them :)

Mind you one of the guys suggested for edging black use the Vallejo model colour German uniform Grey. Very nice it works too. Talked me out of buying 4 paints in the process...
