Sorry pepes.

Not been around much recently as I've had PC probs. I've got everything loaded onto a new hard drive but now my DVD won't read any discs although it's alegedly 'working normally'.

So, can't play any games atm :-(.

If there are any techies that can help... it's a Hitachi DVD player (GD-750?) and I'm on win2K sp2. I can't seem to find a driver online except for a dos one :-\

Oh well. Should have stuck to flakey win95

CD drives/DVD drives/CD RWs dont need drivers as such, they have flashable firmware that very rarely gets updated, and as far as the OS is concered the drivers are the ide controllers/bus mastering, if your hardrives or any other drives are working, and especially if one is on the same channel as your dvd drive then it sounds like either the IDE cable or the drive itself. If its actually seeing the drive then I think its more likely the drive.. it may be that the part of the drive that talks to the motherboard and says 'Im here, im working ok' is functional but the drive mechanics arent. Not a biggy tho as theyre cheap as chips now.. got my last one about a month ago for 25 quid from www.aria.co.uk
Id do the following 1st tho

1. Go to your motherboard manufacturers website and get the lastest drivers, especially if its a via board.
2. Try the IDE cable on a different drive see if it does owt silly.
3. Listen for a secondary spin up on your drive, the 1st one is a kickstart, the second one is a seek spin and sounds faster, it should sound like a car changing down gear, if it only does one big spin its not seeking.
4. Work for Apple and get sent on a feckin boring 3 day course on CD/DVD drive repair even tho you havnt picked up a screwdriver in about 5 years.

Cheers m8y.

I'll have a fiddle, break it and buy a new one :).

Can you clean CD drives or is this an urban myth?!

you can clean the lens, but it really shouldnt cause it not to read any discs at all. If your drives getting on a bit id bin it and get a new one..

also if you havnt got a cd-rw you can get a combo drive now for 60-70 quid thatll do cd,dvd and write cds and cdrw.

Mark,

Thanks very much for the advise m8 - the aria site turned up trumps with a 'deal of the day' on a Pioneer DVD ROM Drive for 27 + vat. Bloomin bargain!

Am sorted. Mind you, it was probably a driver prob as the old drive works fine in my old PC...

:p

I should have posted this in the technical area but thought it best to reply here to keep consistent with my previous post. So there.
