Talking of Deathwing

My first attempt at painting a Deathwing terminator. On the whole its okay, i can spot the flaws now though :) In particularly im wondering if rather than using pure white to highlight the armour edges i should do a 1:1 white / bone white mix (or even a 2:1) (and i need to learn to work the camera"!)

Last time I did one of them I used bleached bone to skull white 3:1, then a finer 2:1, then a finer 1:1 highlight, pick out extreme highlights in skull white very finely and then give it a wash if you wish.

Doing line highlighting in this manner means that it blends better and doesn't leave a very distinct edge wherever it has been applied, the wash blends this even further resulting in a more blended and gradual edge highlight, works very well indeed on terminators.

For highlighting you want to use much thinner paint as this will help to hide the transitions. On Space Marine armour you can get away with one line highlight and an edge highlight, more than this will give better results.

Assuming that your base colour is Bleached Bone, make up a 3:1 or 4:1 or so mixture of Bleached Bone and Skull White. Thin this right down so it's practically transparent and then paint it on around the edges of all the plates to about a brush width in. Then make a 1:1 white/bone mix and use that on edges and vertices only. There should be no width to these highlights, just the actual edges.

cheers guys. Ill give it a go on the next mini i paint up because im definately not happy with the edging on that one :)

Still it wont be too noticable on a table top and thats mostly the quality im looking for.

Req raises a point I rather rashly forgot there, water it down FFS! You need to do this with almost everything you paint onto a miniature else it winds up looking like something that rhymes quite closely with bite.

Ooo I remember painting these ... when it comes to mixing, now I always found it hard to reproduce the same colours when mixing up new batches (talking about when I was younger than 16 though ...)
Zed, can you find a Macro mode on the camera? :)

My photos are taken with a crappy digital camera that's a few years old now. Use a macro mode (usually has a flower icon) and make sure the thing is in focus. You need a lot of light to photograph miniatures well but the flash will wash the whole picture out so I use a folded piece of paper in front of the flash as a super-cheap flash diffuser. That way I get the light but not the glare.
