40K Magentizing Terminators

Okay one for the pros amongst you

Im toying with the idea of magnetizing an assault squad and heavy weapons terminator.

So the idea obviously: 2mm X 2mm magnets in the arm sockets, likewise on the arms itself (TH, SH and LC's) and the flamer and AC making sure the magnets are flush?

Doable? Magnets too big? (i will have 2X2 and 1X1 available to me) is it actually worth bothering with?

Terminators are pretty easy to magnetise as long as you don't go for wacky poses with them. Arms down, elbows in and you're all good.

2x2 round magnets should be ok, just double check the polarity before you glue them in. They would be about the smallest ones I'd use for that, I generally use 3x1 magnets for stuff like that.

I'd have the agree with Req that the 3x1mm magnets would be better for the job (and make the shoulders a little less 'sticky outy'.

Personally I dont bother with magnets on anything smaller than a dreadnought but needs no doubt must

That said it can be worth using a 3mm drill bit to sink a hole into the areas where the magnets will go (shoulders of the bodies, use a scalpel or other sharp piece of metal for the arms prior to adding shoulder pads, just shave off the required amount) if you feel confident enough to do so, this leaves all the surfaces at the same height with the magnets in place meaning the model will always look right, this is very difficult to get right though as if not careful you can wind up 'drilling' into the torso cavity.

And for gods sake check the polarities!

Maybe not worth it then. I will probably experiment on one of the throw aways i have and see how it looks before going full scale onto the expensive ones

Polarity .. check! the fex i have which is magnetized (from ebay) is all wrong and causes me no end of issues !!!!

Bear in mind with termies, you won't have enough shoulders, so need to buy some extras.

yeah i have 10 on order. plus extra torso for the DA termie legs you get in the veteran upgrade box.

talking of which im guesinng no one has any parts from the DA vetran sprue laying around? in particular the AC ammo box (or a Space wolves equiv or something). Ive ended up with an AC but no ammo box for it. Rubbish since they go for shit loads on ebay and i cannot find the ammo box on its own anywhere

I probably do actually. I bought the DA vet box a while ago just to paint up and I haven't done anything with it yet. I'll have a look for you tonight.

I had a look and I can't find the sprues although I found the DA vet squad themselves. Either I gave them away before I left Dublin or they're buried in a box that isn't with the rest of my hobby stuff.

I'f I do unearth them they're yours.
