Having another look...

Zed over the weekend talked about the DDO experience and how it has changed since we all had a look at it a few years ago.

So... I have installed DDO again, downloaded the patches and popped in to take a look.

When I have got to grips with the controls (/cough), I'll give peeps a shout.

Oh, and all my characters are 1st level humam fighters. Hhmm.. must have been created to save names.

Have limited play time at the moment but will give it a serious whirl over the weekend.

See you peeps in game. :)

Welcome back matey

I take it that your characters were made on the Lyrander server which is now Devourer. Well to make things interesting we moved to Keeper when we started back so that we could go at it completely afresh and be twinkless when we started.

It was a good move really because Devourer turned into a lagfest as the server threw it's toys out of the pram kicking and screaming (seems to be playing fine now though).

Currently we are in The Spellswords guild who are a cracking bunch of players, so once you're ready we can see about getting you in with them if you want.

Cya in game hopefully bud ;)

Ahh.. okies. I'll take a look at starting on Keeper.

Zed, you mentioned that DDO is now up to Mod 8? I take it that since original release they have added content but have there been any expansion packs as with other MMO's?

Or have they (Turbine) just added the content direct to the game through patching at no additional cost?

I am just wondering (having installed from the original game discs) whether I need to purchase any of the expansions?

Nothing to purchase. Mods are released (to date) FoC :)

Its probably got double or triple the content it had from release these days

Another thing ....

Some people have had issues installing from the original discs and then updating through 2+ years of files.

What may be an option is using the latest TRIAL CLIENT which won't have as much to update.

Ta peeps.

I didn't have any real issues with the download, apart from it taking a while.

Managed to log on last night, jump into a solo dungeon for level one, killed two Iron Defenders and then died when I set off a force trap. :)

Damn traps.

The Miller's debt I take it? That's quite a nasty trap for 1st level even for a rogue as I've seen badly built rogues try and disarm it, fail and then die trying to get out ;)

Teaches a good lesson though.

Okies.. really enjoying the experience of DDO, and I now have an interested sister wanting to have ago.

However, she hates grouping, and I am wondering how far you can go in this game solo. Any idea if the game is soloable to the upper levels?

I did explain that its really a group game, but she likes the graphics and animation of the characters.

She also plays WOW and... EQ, so she is aware of the problems of soloing, especially regarding EQ.

As an aside, cheers Ommy for the groupage over the weekend matey. Was good fun.

Well I can solo most characters up to 7th level or so, that's when the quests start getting a bit more involved. There are builds that can solo a lot higher especially those that self-buff/heal, I'm thinking Rangers(with a dash of rogue for UMD & traps and Paladins).

There are quests that can't be solo'd at all though because they depend on a group splitting and achieving 2 goals.

Solo-play is a lot easier since they brought in the explorer zones, again a ranger is good for these as they can stealth to the explorer points for the XP or range mobs.

So would she duo with you, because duoing can be quite successful as well.

I hate PUGing most of the time and much prefer grouping with the ClanUK guys but The Spellswords are pretty damn shit hot at what they do and a great bunch of folks who are mainly "mature" gamers.

We've been a bit sparse on people playing over the last week, we need to get you into Spellswords to be honest.

http://www.guilduniverse.com/spellswords/default.aspx

If you sign up to guilduniverse and apply to the Spellswords we can ask in game. Just put in the app that you know Zedo, Readon etc

Hope to catch you in game this week, if we don't get any people showing up on Tuesday then if you're on I'll have a look through my mules to which one I can crack out and play with if you fancy it? ;)

Likewise ill happily break out one of my lowbies and run with you Tuesday dependant on who's on. Ideally id like to play Koril but at level 4 he will probably stuff your Exp for you ;-)

Mayhap ill build a new cleric or a barbarian and play alongside you.

Cheers Sorontar.

I am limited at present during the week, but from next week I should be able to put more time into DDO.

I'll apply to Spellswords when I get home this evening, which should help in groupage.

Thanks for mentioning the Ranger. That could be a good option for her (or me for that matter), although she seemed quite keen to try a monk.

(As an aside, duel wielding ranger sounds like a fun class to play. :) )

She tends to try out all of the classes and settle on a few.

Oh, and I have helped her out in other games when she is stuck, but she doesnt like grouping, bad experience with pugs.

I think she doesn't like the pressure placed on her to 'perform' with the class she is playing. She prefers a more relaxed, calm and slow play style. So, raiding style play is not her 'thing'.

Good to know you CAN solo through a good chunk of the game.

Ta Zed.

Jett is now level 2 and 4k xp from level 3.

Fighter build, with heavy armour, shield and bastardsword.

Went for mid to high Str, Dex and Con with Int, Wis and Cha all at 10.

Think his strength is 16, will build on that as I level. Oh and build on Sunder, Trip and Intimidate, which I was having fun with on Sunday when grouped with Ommy.

Although, I couldnt spot a barn door even if it fell on him. :)

She should join in with our upcoming none twinked group were going to kick off come Mod8. We hardly play to conformity either at times. Besides were fairly relaxed and just have fun. Muddling through quests at our pace and talking utter tripe.

Yeah I actually think your sis would enjoy The Spellswords as well. Although they do raid regularly I've never felt a pressure to do so and they seem to be happy as long as I am enjoying my game time.

They're very helpful and generous as well.

She could get some good groups within the guild then she'd limit her need to PUG really (although there will always be times that there is nothing on group wise due to 12 players being on a scheduled raid), which is when soloing could come in.

Septian

I tak ur cheerioZ
I've just reactiveated my account to have another go, Planning on making a Paladin (Had a level 4 before i stopped, who is still in ClanUK strangley, i checked)
I will be making on Keeper, Any advice on build at all? I can remember how to play fine enough (roughly) but the character creation has changed alot.
