Making my own ruined buildings - /nods at Zed

After playing Zed and using his ruined buildings of foamcore I finally got around get getting a better setup for modelling (no more glue on the dining table !), and made a start on my first building yesterday, 6cm from floor to the next floor as per a video Zed had pointed me too, and I'm really happy with the results and then got my models out the box and started playing around, now all the normal models fit perfectly, with space, but some of the AoBR nobs and the warboss don't fit in the bottom floor as 6cm isn't high enough for them.

Is this kind of thing normal and simply the case massive creatures (well someone with an axe over there head, or with a bosspole) simply can't fit inside the ruin, but could fit on the open floor above. I did knock up a rough 7cm floor with carboard as a test but it is then fair to say the normal models look abit small and could use the windows as doors if I try and keep the scaling the same.

So basically should I worry about some areas of the ruined buildings being out of bounds for some stuff or is that part of the idea of these things ?

And lastly based ruins, is that more to add extra details, such as rocks and rubble and grass on the ouside infront of the buildings, and inside or is there a actual reason when playing it should be based ? (as I'm planning all the stuff to be unbased apart from some smaller objectives I'm planning on building)

main reason for basing (other than looks) is that you can then say 'area terrain' and the whole area counts as cover, rather than an individual model needing to be actively covered.

size of buildings is always iffy, as the 'official' buildings often look a bit large (well over twice the height of a guardsman per floor, for example), but well - thats imperial architecture for you, a) you wouldnt want to offend a visiting marine or ogryn by having your doorways too low for him and b) the size is probably a mark of how powerful the original owners were and c) a lot of the buildings are probably ruined factories and workshops, not homes.

as for models fitting... well. depends i guess. we tend to allow people to say 'that models on the ground floor' and put it on the roof for example, but it depends on how 'exact' your playmates are i guess.
we certainly dont allow you to do stuff like have a roof thats too low for big creatures, slide a bunch of marines in there, and then insist they cant be charged by anything that doesnt fit. also, filling the top layer of a building with models so that enemies cant get in base-to-base doesnt fly either.

PVA glue takes AGGGEESSS to dry :(, keep picking the thing up and the floor falls out :(

Did you use PVA zed, or a hot glue gun ?

Requiel

PVC Love God
Also use furniture tacks or other small pins to hold the pieces together as well as the glue.

Super glue or plastic glue will just melt foam.

Rogue Chimp
The GF9 stuff i used melted a little bit of the foam (probably 1mm or less worth) as part of the bonding process. but it didnt melt the outer shell of the foam core. Its probably best to use a hot glue gun though.

Well finally PVA seems to be firming up, though leaving them in drying position till tomorrow just to give em as much help as I can. If after that they fall apart I'll get a cheapo glue gun and do it that way. If it wasn't for the waiting for the PVA glue to dry I think I could have made 8 or 9 buildings today and put some more of the models together. Hey ho, good learning, and great fun.

The three I made on friday, now dried and with a little beam glued into the front edge. Overall I'm very happy with the results, though think having put lootas all around them I think if nothing else doorways need to be a little wider and if I have a floor ledge there isn't any point having a part that isn't actually wide enough to put a model on. Overall though I'm really happy with the results and think I will stick with PVA as I've noticed for smaller areas without the strains of cardboard trying to spring apart it's pretty quick.

Windowsills may be added before I paint, but I'm not sure
