O'Driscoll Tackle.

Anyone seen the new footage of the Lions v NZ match where Brian O'Driscoll, the Lions Captain, was spear tackled?

Its an absolute disgrace; they could have broken his neck and killed him rather than just dislocating his shoulder. The IRB have stated no retrospective action will be taken. Personally I think that Tana Umaga and Kevin Mealamu should be banned from the game for life. It was pure thuggery and IMO, was a criminal act. Stuff like that has no place in sport and the New Zealand team should, at the very least, issue a PROPER apology for their behaviour.

Sounds pretty bad, but those bad boy Rudgy Players have nothing on Ice Staker Tonya Harding - hiring thugs to go and bust Nancy Kerigans (her rival) Kneecaps before the Olympics, that's just so wrong.

I think its worse to be honest because it was done on the field of play. You cannot have thuggery where someone might die on the sports field and see the culprits get away with it.

Apparently 75 people have died in competitive matches of Rugby. Not good.

The irony is they're more likely to charge the guy who shot the footage than the gibbons who made the tackle.

Not seen it, but I think it depends if the tackle was pre meditated (i.e the players talked about it and planned it before hand) or whether it was a flashpoint, spur of the moment, seeing red anger attack. If it's the first then yep the players (sorry thugs) should be banned and brought up on a criminal charge, if it's the latter an appology should be issued maybe a ban.

Tonya's was clearly pre meditated to the point of scary!

to do a spear tackle, you have to actually tackle differently to the normal type of tackel, so there is now way it was an accident. i know i played Rugby for years, luckily never been on the recieving or giving of the tackle.

Not quite sure what a spear tackle is but I didn't see anything that looked like what I imagine it to be.

One of the All Blacks had hold of O'Driscoll's right side and leg and was trying repeatedly to pick him up. Another All Black came in from the opposite side and they turned him upside down and slammed him down on his head/neck/shoulders.

By the time they did this, the ball was clearly long gone so no way it was an accident.
