The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar

From what I've read there it seems as though they've ripped the shit out of the books and pretty much done a LOTR version of WoW. Tom Bombadill just turning up saving all and sundry everytime someone does the instance? Bollocks.

The word raid is used a bit. Apparently on the official site they were not doing raid content. Not as the word is used to describe it in other MMO's anyway.

On well, I'll still play it, but my expectations are lowered.

It has a great story line which linterwaves the books/film - you get to meet characters from the books/film from the initial tutorial.
They also have a number of Tolken approved writers on the team and are in close contact with the Tolken Estate.
Give it a chance, still a way to go yet and you can have a fiddle at E3 if you are going.

It seems as though they are going for a big section of the pie, which is fair enough. I think characters like Tom turning up to help all and sundry and the fact that you can cross swords with the Witch King are taking things a bit to far though.

Thats the problem with a license like this. You can't really have a raid to kill the Balrog, Witch King, Saruman or Sauron, it completely goes against the lore. Maybe its what the general population want, but you have to have boundaries.

I'll still play though as I said, nothing could stop me. I just hope they keep it together.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with it, The fact they have Bombadill turning up in quests may work out really well if done right. The real problem is everyone's idea of "right" is different. I hope the party limit is 9, it seems to obvious a thing to not actually have but you never can tell.

I assume group size will be limited to 9? :)

That was the original fellowship size there was no guilds just fellowships.

Since then its been put through the a n other mmg mangle though.

I really thought it would be good to have just 9 people from the start to the end game . Kinda like I play most games though , get a static and stick with it. Not good for every body but the way I tend to play.

the problem these games have, i suppose, is that the original storyline wasnt written with an mmo in mind.
so yes, you could write one for lotr that runs alongside it, and has no interactions with anything from the books (since if it did, it would logically be written in books. otherwise its violating canon!), but then whats the point of it being an lotr mmo? if you want it to be accurate, you could never even kill a ringwraith, let alone go up against the witchking, because they all have predestined deaths.
i think in WoW its working out quite well, but thats because its going onto the end of an existing storyline, whereas the end of lotr was fairly definate, and you couldnt really set an mmo after the events of lotr. (ie. end of lotr = made it to mt doom, destroyed the ring = good guys won. end of WC3:TFT = arthas ascended the frozen throne, to reinforce the most powerful being on azeroth = bad guys winning.). Additionally, blizzard have been vague enough with the background of Azeroth that its fairly easy for them to add new things into it. (i dont think Ragnaros had even been mentioned before WoW, but now he's quite firmly an important part of the lore.). The same couldnt be done for lotr (at least, not if you want it to reflect the books) because the history of the world is so well detailed.

The 4th Age would actually be quite cool if they did it right, enough there for a guide for the devs but also a hell of a lot to play with in the way of space for expansion.

I played a PBEM set in 4th Age Harad (initially) and the way the DM worked things was really cool.
