Trying out WoW...

Well, after 5 years I finally succumbed. I downloaded the trial version and am currently pottering around a little with a Human Paladin named Darakar. I am saving the Darakor name in case I decide to play for a while and make it far enough to create a Death Knight.

If any of you lot see me in game, holler. :)

First impressions...

How nice of them to name the human city after me. I have been using that last name in RPGs for the past 20+ years. Nice of them to make the bastion of humanity a testament to me. Much appreciated.

Combat seems fairly easy and straightforward. Even half equipped I kill named mobs 2 levels above me with ease.

In fact, everything seems easy. Skills from other MMOs like body pulling translate well. I am only level 7 but haven't died yet.

Will have to see whether this interests me enough to play it a while...

Tbh thats why I left, I tried it out and have gone back a couple of times but the game is just so damn easy I get bored.

I am bored in EQ2 now though hoping to get into Rift beta event 2 but unless there is a lot changed for Wow I cant see me going back anytime soon

What server are you on Darakor? Like any game, It is better played with friends. :) As for the lower levels you forget its for noobs, so the chance of dying is slim, I was pulling 4 mobs on to my level 16 shammy yesterday and still surviving.:)

I am on Terenas? Teranas? Terasomethingorother. The one SPS is on and I think most people here used to be there on the Alliance side, too.

I have in fact managed to die yesterday to my overstated feeling of invincibility... Note to self: Charging a room may not be an overly good idea if it contains 3 nameds 2 levels above you.

The first levels so far remind me of the first few levels with my SK in EQ. No noticeable amount of skills, attacks or spells. Although I am told at level 9 I actually get my first heal.

So far I am not overly impressed, but that could well be because I am playing it solo and let's be honest, most MMOs are downright boring when played alone.

I will be on later tonight, If you are playing on terenas I will keep an eye out for you :) I will happily sponsor you if you would like to join SPS, It will give you more people to play with.

Well, right now I am on at odd hours and as I only have the trial version, I am told I cannot send tells out to people, join guilds, etc.

Still, I always keep a look out for familiar names when I run around. :)

Play at least till you get to play a dungeon.
Subject to any changes in Cata...
.... If you Alliance you should be able to do 'The Deadmines' at around level 15 onwards, If you a Hordie Ragefire Chasm is available slightly earlier if I recall.
You'll see the grouping aspect of the game them, if it's still leaving you ungripped them probably call it quits at that point.
As your a Paladin (or Loladin to give them there full name) you'll have the choice of whether you'll be a Tanker, a Healer or DPS (which you'll choose via your talent points).

All factions can do all instances now Janie. When you are level 15 or so you get a button to "join random instance" and all are available, subject to your level. Its the fastest way to grind now, or was in the pre-cataclysm patch. They turned instances in to Ball Runs if you get the reference.

Oh yeah I forgot the about the dungeon finder, I never played original WOW (1-60) with it, so forgot you probably could use it in those levels - beats spamming the LFG channel :)
Alliance in Ragefire Chasm seems wrong though!

They've also moved the dungeon quests for the 1-60 dungeons inside of the instance, so the first time you go it's a LOT of XP, they've done something similar with the 80-85 dungeons, but not changed the 60-80 ones.

They've also shifted the level ranges on a lot of the higher 60 dungeons so people get to experience them, as no-one was doing strat/scholo/diremaul anymore, so they're now in the mid 40's range

Why are Paladins called Loladins? Anything especially funny about them? Or are they just that common?

I think it goes back to when the game first cameout and Paladins were the class that could only be picked by Alliance players with Shamen being Horde only. The general concensus was that Shamen were better, so Paladins became Loladins - with there bubble (Magic shield thingy) and heathstone being one of there more viable tactics (ie runaway) in PvP coursing most mockery.
But don't worry the Paladin class your playing right now is a massive change from what they were originally and they can Tank, Heal and DPS as well as any class in the game - the only downside is there are tons of them playing the game, them and Druids seemed to be the most popular classes when I last played because of there hybrid ability to do cover any role.
The straight out DPS classes (ie classes that can't do healing or tanking) Rogue, Mage, Warlock and Hunter were getting less and less.

Ah, I see. When I played EQ2, my mains were some of the least played classes in the game. Also back in EQ when I started playing SK, nobody really wanted to play them.

I generally like to play hybrids and have found that Paladin and or Shadowknight equivalent classes are what I enjoy most in most MMOs. If I do play at least medium term, as of Level 50 I will have Paladin and Death Knight and just stick with what is more fun.

Okay, am currently level 14. Finding it hard to get gear, drops seem rare and quest rewards are enough to keep me alive, but I still only have half the slots filled.

Saw a few people online that I recognise from EQ, but couldn't send them tells.

The quests do not consist of nearly as much back and forth as the EQ2 quests, but so far there seems to be very much a guiding hand on all the quests. You are essentially pushed out the door at one quest hub and told to get to XXXX where the next few quests await. Do you ever reach a point where you can decide to go left or right or will the quests just continue to lead you through the world?

I just got a second heal, so I am beginning to feel semi useful. ;-)

you will have quests coming out of your ears so you can go to a few zones after a while. I am a completist freak that likes to do all the quests in a zone before I move on though :(
