EVE Online

Well while looking for things to mess around with during the day a day of trying UO and really not getting on with it, let me to EVE and a free 14 day trial and I must say so far it's alot of fun.

I've got a new ship, 2 mining lasers and gone a fair distance to try and join a Corp that seemed to suit me and be able to help me learn the basics.

Anyone else still play this ? I've some questions mainly regarding mining and thought I'd ask here.

To get the ball rolling.

1. After heading 22 jumps away to join this Corp, I headed out, did my usual right click on open space, asteroids, and went to a nearby place to find loads of asteroids, I mined till my cargobay was full then noticed pirates closing in on me, with only mining lasers equipped I jumped straight back to the station but had been hit a few times before I'd warped and I had a 15 minute aggressive action thingy at the top of my screen. Is this simply because I was attacked or had I mined asteroids maybe claimed by someone else ? And how useful or effective are drones as a mean of defence because I mainly want to mine and make things but not be blown up if a pirate or two turn up.

its been a while since i played actively, but i'll help where i can. seems a bit odd though.
firstly, the pirates were almost certainly npcs. otherwise youd be dead. which, unless i'm quite mistaken, shouldnt result in agressive action thingy :/ that should only happen if you attack another player or an empire npc. that said, i'll ask my mates who play eve and might be able to shed some light on this.

oh, and out of interest, what corp did you join? i have at least a passing knowledge of most of the long term ones.

heres what i'm told... "As far as I know, that 15 minute countdown against beltrats is only confusing and should be removed since it doesn't mean anything."
in other words, they put it in by mistake when they put in the agression timers for conflicts with empire forces and other players.

Don't suppose you have a Drones 101, or the simple basics of them do you ? I'm aiming to be a miner and crafter but would like something to see off the NPC pirates (only in 0.8 and 0.7 worlds at the mo so assuming I shouldn't stumble across many PC pirates)

hmm, i never used drones much myself - i was a caldari missile whore when i played. Drones are a Gallente thing. theres a few drone skills, that affect stuff like number controllable, damage, range, flight speed, etc.
they are very effective at seeing off enemy frigates though, so that should work out ok for you.
you shouldnt find any PC pirates - if they attack you they'll get ganked by concord.
be careful of spending too much time mining, its what drives a lot of people away from the game - its the most repetitive and dull aspect of eve.

btw, i would try and get you an invite into my corp (infinite improbability inc., a founder of the trust alliance, which is devoted to neutrality and trade, and is one of the biggest tech 2 and capital ship producers), but theres quite a high chance that they're about to be involved in a rather messy war :p so it likely wouldnt be a safe place to hang out....

I played a Caldari in beta. Drones were ok for mining (dam slow and annoying to retrieve when a pirate wing pops into your field and you want to get out in a hurry.

Personally I'd recomend sticking to mining lazers.

drones can be used to defend yourself though - and if its an emergency, just leave em.
theyve been made a lot more disposable lately, with you expected to use a couple at a time, and have loads in your hold.

i've decided to try and get eve working for me again over the next few days, so you might see me online as Shimatu.

I was planning on 2 Miner 2 mining lasers (just trained to be able to use them) and then drones to defend me if I need to be. The trouble is the Frigate I'm in only holds one drone and I've no idea how they work so it may be a steep learning curve :)

Working up to a cruiser for more mining and then hopefully onto the mining barge, once I get the mining barge I'll also have alot of the other training I need to get a combat ship as well. So I could I assume go mining in one, then fly back and get into a combat one if the mood takes me ?

oh definately. i've got about 20 ships or so, a lot of people have more. i've got interceptors, battlecruisers, frigates, industrials, miners, tech-2 cruisers, the lot. mostly caldari, ofc :p.
but then my chars 2and a half years old, and has been learning skills that whole time. dont expect to be able to just dive into a new ship and master it right away - the number of people i've seen get themselves a battleship and then go lose it in its first fight because they dont have the shield and gunnery skills to use it effectively.
regarding skills... the best ones to learn first, from a long term point of view, are the Learning skills. But to level these up fully would take you weeks, during which you gain no new ship proficiencys or anything. which is damn boring, of course. so, i'd say, take it easy for now - go for instant use skills, that let you use more drones or better guns or whatever. when you decide whether you want to carry on playing, start levelling up the learning skills a bit. in the long run, this will let you learn the fun skills faster. (something like a lvl 5 learning skill will take like 2 weeks to learn, but will reduce the training time of all skills related to it.)

oh, and give me a yell if you want to get a cruiser - i can throw you an osprey or something like that free of charge. what race are you btw? and what race ships you liking?

Gottaa how do you manage to see the text in Eve, I always had trouble trying to see that tiny text? Unless you can scale the text now?

Text does have some scaleability, but with my new shiney reading glasses (left eye covered up) I can read without much of a problem since the operation :)

I'm Gallente Zeus and no real idea on what type of ships, I've got learning 2 on most things so far, and have a Navitus frigate and was looking at a Thorax next (training wise with shields and guns that's not likely for maybe 4 days though).

At the mo though with the new drone it's so much easier, it takes out the NPC pirates quicker than I could of so I'm very chuffed right now :)

P.S Is it all one server and if so how do you add friends so I can see you all :) I only play during the day though (sometimes leaving it on during the evening so I can nip up and train the next skill)

yep, tis all one server :) thats part of what makes the forums so interesting ;)
i havnt played for a while, so cant answer the other things :p i'm planning to play tonight though.

gallente, ey... nice :) of course, they're a bunch of tree-hugging-democracy-loving-frenchie-carebears, but ya know ;)
the thorax is one of the most deadly ships in the game, especially for its size. i've seen my brother use his 'rax to MWD (microwarpdrive) up to a battleship, set 10 drones on it, and pound it with the 5 blasters - while all the time, the enemy ship cant hit a damn thing cause its too close, and cant escape cause he's got it scrambled :p that was a long time ago though, and now theres much tougher ships than battleships out there :)
the 'rax is also fairly good for mining, because it can fit lots of mining lasers, and carry a bay full of drones to protect itself.

Main thing I'm really after right now is more cargo space, about the infact jump 6 gates to get some more training and get some better cargo expanders and learn some better control of my energy usage :)

Infact if you are still there Zeus what else basic training should I get, about to get

Engineering
Shield Operations
Hull Upgrades

about cargo space.
the 'normal' way of mining in eve, is to do the mining in one ship, and jettison the ore to a cargo pod. the pods can store large amounts of stuff (27,500m^3 iirc, compared to your little ships 200 or so). Then, once youve mined a decent amount, you land the mining ship, and bring out a hauler (industrial - in your case an itteron mk 1 i think it is) to bring the ore back to the station.
there is a slight risk that ore in the pod might be stolen, though i hear ccp have done something to stop this lately, dunno what though.
