If you're thinking of starting this then PM someone who plays for a buddy invite. As said, you get a longer trial (3 weeks instead of 2) and, if you susbcribe afterwards then they get a free month added to their sub.

You can PvP (real pvp in organised gangs) on your first night in the game. You'll even be useful if the people you're flying with help you out with cash and advice. It will be a while before you're a solo pwnmachine but that's really not what the game is about for the most part.

Taaii and I are both in GS on our mains but we also have an Empire alt corp for industrial stuff (this used to be the CUK corp before everyone left to go and play in other places).

I don't really recommend hooking up with our alt corp as there'll be no-one around a lot of the time and we don't do anything fun in that. Getting into Goonswarm is also tricky as they don't openly recruit (and anyone who tells you that they do is probably trying to scam you). Taaii could sponsor you if you really wanted to join or you could hook up with my Goon corp but you'd likely be better off finding a low-sec pirate, faction warfare or general PvP corp to cut your teeth with and give you a taste for blood.

All noobs are strongly encouraged to check out the publically viewable parts of the Goon wiki. It's a superb resource for all new pilots even though you don't get full access to the advanced guides.

Thanks for the tips folks, just working my way through the career tutorials and getting the basic skills sorted and up to a sensible level at the moment.

Cheers, done.

Interested in making a good fighter type char, so will either try gallente for the all round versitality or the minmater as they sound good for that.

Okay, done. I have no idea whether the text of the mail is going to be in german or english, though, as the webpage seems to be sometimes german and sometimes english. ;-)

To be fair, it really helps to have a guide or someone to ask questions, as well as friends to send you cash, etc. ;-) There are so many bad and stupid things you can do and especially in the beginning, a helping hand counts for a lot.

Other than that, expect that everybody out there that you don't know is trying to scam you and operate on the principles of maximum paranoia and you should have a decent start... ;-)

BTW, let me know what the name of your char is and also what race you are playing. I may be able to send you some cash and/or some okayish weapons your way for an easier start. It won't be much, as I am still a noob myself, but in the beginning everything helps. :)

K started the trial already...to many windows!
its actually different than I thought it would be I expected more like an elite type game than a point and click (if that makes sense)

oh and the name is buzz'lightyear :)

What race your you Max? If you are Minmatar, you start fairly close to where I am, so I might be able to pass some gear along.

Make sure you join the ClanUK chat channel mentioned earlier in the thread. I'm in as Alf Saddlebags, Gallante in a Tristan at the moment.

So far I've spent more time training skills than flying but am getting to the point where I think I've got most of the basic skills sorted (I've been using certificates to make sure I have at least basic coverage in the areas that sound important.

Just finished the military career missions and have been given the lead to the "Sisters of Eve epic quest arc". I think I'll do the other career training missions first though as they seem to give decent items and cash to get you started.

Top tip, the military career tutorials give you two new ships. One early on (forgotten it's name) which helps with the missions and a Tristan frigate at the end which seems a pretty decent frig so don't spend anything buying a new ship early on. You seem to get a good mix of skill books and items as well from the missions (and indeed from looting the rats wrecks).

I need to go back to a rookie system and complete the main tutorial as well. For some reason I seemed to get branched off to the careers tutorials without having finished the basic stuff so I still look there looking at the screen looking confused from time to time. I'm sure there's a lot easier ways to do stuff than the way I'm doing it at the moment (i seem to be relying on right clicking on stuff a lot for context menus).

So far everyone seems really helpfully, in particular the CUK channel peeps, but most in general seem to appreciate what a learning curve it is and are happy to help with advice.

Still, fun, and it'd be nice to have some more noobs about - gives the other someone else to point at and laugh at ;)

Well, Gallente is good. They are the good friends of the mighty Minmatar after all. :)

Not as good as Minmatar, though. ;)

And I mean that mostly as in that I have some spare Minmatar useable weapons floating around and none for Gallente - who would also have a veeeery long flight to pick the stuff up. :)

Dont get too focused in gallente, their T2 ships are pretty shit currently comapred to others but will probably change further down.

Matar and amarr area really the best ship races really at this current point in time.
