Dont get too focused in gallente, their T2 ships are pretty shit currently comapred to others but will probably change further down.

Matar and amarr area really the best ship races really at this current point in time.
Oh now you tell me!!!!!! ;)

Ok, so I guess at this stage from a skill point of view that's not a problem, just need to train frigate to V for one of the other races and then the appropriate weapon types for the race. *grumbles about having put a load of skill into drones*

Better to have found out now than invest a lot of time and effort if it'll pointlessly handicap play later on. Especially if it's relatively trivial to train for other race ships.

Drone skills transfer across to all race ships. Although Gallente are the ones who rely on them the most, you'll want reasonable drone skills no matter which race you fly.

Looks like Minnis share the most skills with Gallente so unless there's a good reason to go for Amarr ships instead I'll get my Minni frigate & weapon skills up to par.

Well I went Caldari, I just couldnt do Galente after I heard the accents....

That said though I shall put the channel on my over view, currently working hard at missions to try and get myself a nice shiny Hawk or Harpy, although Covert Ops are looking interesting too I have to say....

In general:

Amarr: Armour tankers, use lasers, some missiles.
Caldari: Shield tankers, use missiles, some hybrid turrets
Gallente: Armour tankers, use hybrid turrets, some missiles
Minmatar: Mixture of armour/shield tankers, use projectiles, some missiles

There are some exceptions to that; for example the Ferox (Caldari BC) is often fitted with lasers and the Myrmidon (Gallente BC) can have a mean shield tank on it. In general though that's how the skills interact. Drones are more important for some Gallente ships (Vexor, Ishtar, Myrmidon, Dominix) but most ships cruiser sized and above will use them to some extent so those are pretty universal.

Harpys and hawks are pretty suck in pvp so i'll save you the skill training right now. Covert ops dont shoot anything, just so you know.

Covops are mostly scouting vessels. You'll be doing important work so that other people can have fun. They're also expensive to lose (although this shouldn't happen often). As Taians says, if you're shooting anything in your covops then you're probably pretty screwed (none of mine even have any weapons fitted).

If you want to fly something small and exciting then Interceptors are the small dogfihting ship of choice. Just be aware that if your skills aren't so great that you'll get spanked regularly - and like any T2 ship the cost to lose one is pretty harsh.

Ceptors - Taranis and Crusader are sexy solo ships. Do sweet DPS, tackle and can take on stuff bigger their own size. Crow dps is pretty meh but is probably the hardest ceptor to kill.

Covert ops - Best for an alt really if you plan to use it regularly but a bait/tackle buzzard is fun espcially when its got an online Cyno you can fire and drop your carrier onto their gang on your main account. I like doing that :D

Well after discussions last night the Harpy is going to be for missions and I intend on grabbing a Merlin and joining in on some fleet actions this weekend to see if its going to be my sort of thing.

I see what you mean cost wise though, the T2 frigates cost as much as T1 battle cruisers!

Gonna fire up my account this weekend if I get the chance, I think I'd gone down the mining, with some drone support, but it was all a mystery back then, and I'm pretty sure will be the same now, will I be better off as I'd only played a month or so starting again and just using the original char to give me a headstart on the cash front ?

It's not simply that they cost more, you're also further out of pocket when they die.

The amount of money you get back on insurance for a ship is based on the materials value that you get from reprocessing it, for t1 ships that means that the insurance payout is about the same as a new hull because the only things that go into T1 ship production is minerals. T2 ships take all kinds of weird (read: expensive) stuff to build but the insurance is still only based on the mineral cost. So a T2 cruiser might cost you 140m to buy but when it dies the insurance payout is only 15m or so. That can be a bit of a slap round the chops.

On top of all that, there's no point having a shiny hull and sticking crappy stuff that you bought from Aldi on it. You're going to have T2 modules at the very least and possibly faction and/or officer stuff which will all be gone when the ship goes bang.

Merlins blow, fly a rifter

(or a Machariel - think i've still got a faction/officer fit one lying around somewhere. do RR BS still run?)

Crows used to be one of the best selling Inties. Unfortunately they pretty much sick against a semi-competent pilot and melt in about 3 hits form a well equipped Combat-Intie. Lots of Caldari-noobs train them up and then die. Repeatedly, too the same Stiletto.
